Last Chance to Verify: Over 417,000 Numbers at Risk of Being Lost Permanently
Thousands of prepaid SIM card users across Cyprus face the immediate risk starting tomorrow, December 10, due to failure to complete the mandatory legal identification process.
According to the legislation, any prepaid mobile numbers that have not been fully registered and verified by today, December 9, will be deactivated starting tomorrow, Wednesday, as part of the requirement to officially record the personal details of their holders.
417,386 Numbers Must Be Verified
Currently, 417,386 prepaid mobile numbers in Cyprus must be verified by this final deadline. A significant portion of these numbers belongs to CYTA customers, which still manages the largest number of unverified accounts compared to other telecommunication providers, despite recent progress.
Who Is Affected?
This identification requirement applies to ALL prepaid mobile numbers, regardless of how they are used. This includes not only numbers for personal communication but also those essential for:
- Apartment building elevator operation
- Home alert and notification systems
- Security cameras and other devices requiring a mobile connection
The law, passed in April 2024, aims to enhance national security and combat crime, as anonymous SIM cards were frequently exploited in illegal activities.
Under the law, any holder who does not complete the identification process will have their number cancelled permanently. The SIM card will become non-functional, and the mobile connection will be terminated.
Why the Rush? A Short Extension
The original verification deadline was November 10. A one-month extension was granted until today due to the high volume of identification work. Telecommunication companies were given an initial 18-month period after the law's passage to prepare and inform customers. They are now fully compliant and urging users to act.
