Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa: A New Opportunity for Remote Workers

In a recent decision announced on March 26, 2025, by the Migration Department of the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, Cyprus has reopened its Digital Nomad Visa program. On March 3, 2022, the Council of Ministers increased the ceiling to 500 residence permits, and now the government has officially resumed accepting applications, offering a new opportunity for digital nomads to live and work in Cyprus.

Benefits of the Digital Nomad Visa

The Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa offers a range of benefits for remote workers looking for a base in one of Europe's most attractive destinations. These include:

1. Residency and Work Permit: Successful applicants receive a temporary residency permit, allowing them to live and work in Cyprus for up to one year, with the possibility of renewal.
2. Cyprus Bank Account Not Required: It is standard practice for the Migration Department to require a bank account for third-country nationals when applying for residency. However, this permit does not require such a step, making the process simpler and more appealing.
3. Tax Benefits: Cyprus offers favorable tax rates, with a personal income tax system that can be particularly beneficial for remote workers and freelancers.
4. Access to a High Quality of Life: Cyprus boasts a pleasant Mediterranean climate, a relatively low cost of living compared to other European countries, and high-quality healthcare and education systems.
5. Networking and Business Opportunities: With its growing startup ecosystem and digital nomad community, Cyprus provides ample opportunities for networking and collaboration with other international entrepreneurs.

Procedures for Application

To apply for the Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa, the following steps should be followed:

1. Application Submission: Applicants must submit their application to the Migration Department of the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection. The application will be evaluated based on specific criteria, including employment details and income.
2. Approval and Permit Issuance: After the evaluation, successful applicants will be issued a temporary residency permit, valid for one year. The permit may be renewed for an additional two years, subject to meeting the renewal requirements.

Documents Required

Applicants will need to submit the following documents as part of their visa application:

1. Valid Passport: A passport valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay in Cyprus.
2. Proof of Employment Work: Evidence of remote work, such as a contract with an employer or for self-employment, a contract or contracts of projects or services with a duration that matches or exceeds the requested residence permit period is required. 
3. Income Proof: A bank statement from abroad proving a minimum monthly income with a minimum amount of net €3,500.
4. Health Insurance: Proof of valid health insurance coverage for the duration of the stay.
5. Accommodation Details: Proof of accommodation in Cyprus and utility bill. 
6. Criminal Background Check: A clean criminal record from the applicant's home country.
7. Declaration: Confirming that the applicant can perform duties remotely and that the project does not involve providing services or conducting activities for a client based in Cyprus.
    

Family Reunification

The Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa also allows for family reunification. Applicants can bring their immediate family members (spouse and dependent children) to Cyprus under the same visa terms. Family members will also receive temporary residence permits, which can be renewed along with the primary applicant’s visa.

Salary Requirements

To be eligible for the Digital Nomad Visa, applicants must demonstrate a minimum monthly income. The required income is around monthly net income of at least €3500. The income is increased by 20% for the spouse or partner and by 15% for each child. This income must be proven through documentation such as bank statements. The income requirement ensures that applicants are financially self-sufficient during their stay in Cyprus.

Limitations and Considerations

1. Work Restrictions: The Digital Nomad Visa is specifically for remote workers who are employed outside of Cyprus. Holders of this visa are not allowed to take up local employment in Cyprus.
2. Duration and Renewal: The initial visa is valid for one year and can be renewed for an additional two years, but applicants must continue to meet the income requirements and other eligibility criteria to qualify for renewal.

Non-EU Citizens: The Digital Nomad Visa is open to remote workers from non-EU countries. 

This permit is ideal for third-country nationals who wish to quickly relocate to Cyprus, as the process is more straightforward than other permits. 

It allows you to temporarily establish your home in Cyprus for up to 3 years, either alone or with your family members. 

After 3 years, you have the option to apply for another permit if you wish to continue living permanently in Cyprus.

No language barrier, as English is widely spoken, and the local culture is welcoming.

Remote workers are not subject to Cypriot income tax on their foreign income if they are working from the island.
