New rules for the certification of documents in Cyprus

On 21 February, the Cyprus Ministry of Interior submitted a new draft law to Parliament on the rules for the certification of documents in the country. The changes are aimed at simplifying the certification process, improving its efficiency and security, and preventing fraud.

One of the key aspects of the new legislation is the decision to transfer the possibility of certifying documents from certifying officers to Citizen Service Centers or Κέντρο Εξυπηρέτησης του Πολίτη.

This step is being taken in order to unify and standardise the process, as well as to increase transparency and efficiency in the provision of this service. It should be noted that more than 200 certifying officers will continue to work until they retire, but no new appointments will be made.

A number of measures will also be introduced to prevent fraud and protect against counterfeit certificates. For example, the introduction of electronic registration of certified documents is planned in order to track and reduce the possibility of illegal actions.

Under the new rules, new fees have been set for the certification of documents. The fee is no longer based on the number of signatories, but on the number of pages in the document.

The maximum fees are set as follows:

  • up to 2pages - €5
  • from 3 to 10 pages - €10
  • from 11 to 100 pages - €25
  • from 101 pages and above - €40 .
